Alumni College – African American Involvement in Local and State Politics with Dr. Deonte Hollowell, Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies, and Jerry Abramson, Executive in Residence

In this session, Dr. Deonte Hollowell, Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies, and Jerry Abramson, former Mayor of Louisville, Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky and Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House in the Obama Administration, and current Executive in Residence at Spalding, talk about the history of African American involvement in local politics – city, county and statewide – and what the future expectations are of Black involvement in local politics. Dr. Hollowell will also give an overview of Spalding’s new African American Studies program.

Jerry Abramson is the former Mayor of Louisville, Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky and Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House under President Barack Obama.  He currently serves as Executive in Residence at Spalding University, where, among other things, he hosts the Abramson Leadership Exchange.  

Dr. Deonte Hollowell is Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies within the School of Liberal Studies at Spalding University. Dr. Hollowell, who received his PhD in African American Studies from Temple University and his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Pan African Studies from the University of Louisville, was instrumental in the creation of a minor in African American Studies at Spalding, and he is a co-faculty advisor for Spalding’s Black Student Alliance.
