SUMMARY:Alumni College – Health Care Today: Whom Do We Really Care About? with Brother Ignatius Perkins, Chair, School of Nursing
DESCRIPTION:This mini “course,” part of an offering we are calling “Alumni College,” explores threats to the ability of health services in the United States, driven by technology and financials, to respond to the health care needs of millions of uninsured Americans, especially the lost, the least and the last among us. Moral issues in health care must be resolved and serve as the foundation for a renewed health care system, built on the principles of the rich Catholic moral tradition, that fulfills the call for the common good in response to the question “whom do we really care about” where human dignity, freedom and human flourishing of every person is recognized as the summit of the work before us.\n\nClick Here to Register for Alumni College: Health Care Today – Whom Do We Really Care About? ( http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=ep5nvrwab&oeidk=a07ehar4y7hce41319f )\n\nBrother Ignatius Perkins, OP, PhD, RN, is an experienced nursing and health care leader and a scholar on bioethics.  He currently serves as the Chair of Spalding’s School of Nursing – a position he also held from 2003-05.\nFrom 2010-15, he was the Dean of the School of Nursing at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tennessee, and his career of more than four decades includes numerous other administrative, teaching and research positions in health care and nonprofit settings. He has presented and been published dozens of times, often on issues related to bioethics and medical ethics, and he has served on countless boards and committees.\nPerkins holds two degrees from Spalding – a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (1972) and a Master of Arts in Education (1981) – and is a past recipient of the university’s Caritas Medal, the highest award that a Spalding graduate can receive. He also earned a master’s degree in nursing and a doctorate from the Catholic University of America in Washington. Perkins also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in primary care and clinical bioethics at Georgetown University in Washington, and he earned the National Catholic Certification in Health Care Ethics from the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia.\n
